Breckenridge's Free Snowboard Festival Returns December 18–20—What Visitors Still Need to Pay For
October 10, 2026 | Colorado / Rockies
Breckenridge Ski Resort, owned by Vail Resorts, announced October 7 that the Rockstar Energy Open snowboard and music festival will return December 18–20, 2026. According to the resort, the three-day event is free and includes men's and women's snowboard contests on a rider-designed ParkStyle course, music, art and a festival village.
The distinction for visitors is worth making: the announcement describes festival admission as free. It does not say an Epic Pass, skiing, snowboarding, equipment, parking, travel or lodging will be free. Anyone planning a mountain trip should check the current event schedule, access arrangements and any separately charged activities before spending money.
The larger backdrop is Vail Resorts' business model. The company has been promoting more resort experiences while navigating weaker Epic Pass unit sales. An accessible public event is welcome, but the total cost of attending a mountain is still a reasonable concern for visitors and local communities.
Our view: Events that bring people together without another admission charge are positive. Whether a family can afford the rest of a resort trip is a separate question that the promotional material does not answer.
