Vail Resorts' Epic Experience Strategy: What Is Changing and Why Skiers Are Watching

Vail Resorts says its next phase of growth will focus less on expanding the Epic Pass network and more on changing the guest experience across food, rentals, lessons, technology, service and resort operations. The company calls the strategy 'Epic Experience.'

What Vail says is changing

The plan includes upgraded food at 15 destination resorts, expanded digital purchasing in the My Epic app, more integrated rentals, expanded ski-school technology, continued lift and snowmaking investment, and a new premium private-lesson product called Epic Ascent.

Epic Ascent is the most controversial piece so far

Epic Ascent launches first at Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek. Vail describes it as a more personalized private-lesson experience with concierge support, trip coordination, white-glove gear rental and other high-touch services. The company plans to expand the concept to more resorts for 2027/28.

Some skiers have reacted skeptically to the idea of a more premium tier of service. In public Reddit discussions, critics worry that increasingly segmented experiences could eventually create a wider divide between ordinary passholders and higher-spending guests. Other commenters say concierge and premium lesson services do not matter to them as long as they do not affect ordinary lift access.

The business reason behind the shift

Vail says stronger guest satisfaction, loyalty and spending are central to future growth. In its fiscal 2026 results, the company repeated that Epic Experience is intended to increase visitation, engagement and loyalty by making the trip more personalized and reducing friction throughout the guest journey.

Why critics are watching closely

The strategy lands at a sensitive time. Vail is already facing criticism over customer service, local resort identity, pricing and crowding, while advance pass units for 2026/27 are down about 12% from the comparable period a year earlier. That means the company is trying to improve the experience while also convincing more guests to return and spend more.

Whether Epic Experience addresses those complaints will depend on execution at individual mountains. Investments in lifts, snowmaking and service could improve the day-to-day experience, while premium products such as Epic Ascent may intensify concerns about a more stratified resort experience. Both outcomes are possible, and the changes are still in their early stages.
