Vail Resorts Faces Another Antitrust Fight Over Multi-Mountain Passes
Vail Resorts remains at the center of an antitrust fight over the structure and pricing of multi-mountain ski passes.
In a federal case filed in Colorado, skiers accuse Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain Company of unlawful bundling and other conduct they say inflated prices and suppressed competition. The companies deny the allegations and have asked the court to dismiss the claims.
Recent filings reported in September show Vail and Alterra arguing that skiers are not forced to purchase multi-mountain passes and that discounted pass bundles are simply a form of volume pricing.
The allegations remain contested and have not been proven. But the litigation matters because it challenges one of the central business models that reshaped the modern ski industry: selling broad access across large resort networks rather than competing mainly on single-mountain tickets.
