What Colorado Skiers Are Saying About Vail’s Falling Epic Pass Sales

A new Colorado discussion posted September 30, 2026 about Vail Resorts’ lower Epic Pass sales drew a mix of criticism, concern and disagreement from skiers. The comments are individual opinions, not a representative survey, but they offer a current snapshot of how some Colorado skiers are reacting.

Some skiers welcomed the decline

Several commenters reacted positively to the drop in pass sales, framing it as pushback against large resort operators. Others argued that Vail is diversified enough to absorb weaker pass sales and that independent mountains may be more vulnerable when difficult seasons reduce skier spending.

Independent resorts came up quickly

A recurring theme was concern about smaller mountains. Some commenters said they would rather spend money at independent resorts, while others pointed out that financially weak independent areas can eventually become acquisition targets for larger companies. That disagreement reflects a broader tension in skiing: many customers say they want local alternatives, but those mountains still need enough paying visitors to survive.

Weather remains part of the decision

The discussion also returned to weather uncertainty. Skiers described last season’s poor conditions and concerns about committing money before knowing whether snow and temperatures will cooperate. That matches a theme seen in other recent skier discussions: some people are delaying a pass purchase and considering day trips or destination travel instead.

The business numbers behind the conversation

Vail Resorts reported that advance North American pass product units for the 2026/27 season were down about 12% through September 18 compared with the prior-year period. The company has said poor prior-season conditions and delayed buying by less-committed destination skiers contributed to the decline.

What this tells us

The comments do not establish why pass sales fell, but they show that price, weather, resort consolidation, independent-mountain survival and confidence in the coming season are all part of the current skier conversation. We will continue separating individual opinions from verified company and industry data.
